The first time I heard this from my spiritual mentor over 25 years ago, I had a difficult time wrapping my mind around it. It was during a time I wanted to control things that seemed uncontrollable; like people, places and things. Life was in turmoil and I simply wanted some semblance of order. It seemed the more I tried to control and the more I expected people to comply to my way of doing things, the more out of control things became. The challenge for me was understanding the difference between expectancy and expectations.”

Spiritual Nourishment

Kathleen Gage presents Spirituality and work posted at Daily Awareness. Kathleen says “Our spiritual life is reflected in all we do. There is no separation. Everything we do either moves us closer to our spiritual core or further away. Building a business is most certainly an aspect of spiritual discipline. Yet, many people make a very definite separation of work and spirit. As with your spiritual practices, when you stick with your business journey, are not dissuaded, you are more likely to achieve your desired outcome. Often what can happen is when someone doesn’t see obvious results they tend to give up on whatever it is they are trying to achieve. Would you give up on your spiritual beliefs simply because not all is evident in the time frame you believe appropriate?” I couldn’t agree more Kathleen. Your post reminded me of that poem called Footprints. I remember it from Sunday school. The soul asks Jesus, when looking back on his life and sees footprints in the sand that at times (the hardest times) there was only one set. He asks, “why did you forsake me in my times of need”. Jesus says, “that was when I carried you”. I was only very small when I read this but I have always remembered. What do you think of the New Age idea that belief equals reality? That we only do not manifest what we want because we don’t spend enough time believing in it?

David B. Bohl presents Maintaining Decisional Integrity posted at Slow Down Fast Today!. Lots of great tips David. As for cheesecake being a compromise. There’s no need for tasty food to be bad for you. Try Sally Fallon’s all raw cheese cake. It’s definitely worth the effort.

Food Glorious Food

Rachel presents Biscuits and Pork Sausage Gravy posted at Bakedblog.com - a Mothers blog about baking, cooking, parenting, and enjoying all things in Life.. Mmmmmm. I hope that Pork is Pasture Fed and those biscuits are soaked for at least 7 hours.

New Old-Fashioned Gal presents To Be or Not To Be… A Vegetarian posted at Diary of a New Old-Fashioned Gal. If you do decide to return to eating meat, you’ve come to the right place. Many here have been down that path and have had to recover somewhat. Even if you just need to learn how to digest meat again, there’s many article and recipes that could help. Start with Recovering from Vegetarianism and I highly recommend starting with broth then moving onto well simmered brothy stews.

Natural Health

Joe Lasiter presents Endorphins: The Body’s Own Morphine posted at Natural Pain Relief.A quick list of things to do to feel good. I especially liked the more sex directive. It’s silly but we do sometimes need to be reminded. Of course, Joe, in order for the body to make these hormones it needs building blocks. I’d add cholesterol, Vit B5 and B6 and 12 (raw animal food) and zinc and other minerals, also in animal foods, especially bone broth. And a healthier body is more fun to have sex with. Yours is stronger, more supple, softer skinned and your lover’s breath and body odour smells good if they’re healthy. Yes? I also recommend Raw Liver for better health, especially for a good sex drive.

Diana Bertoldo presents Deep Breathing for the Health of it posted at Live Beyond Stress and Illness. This is a very well written and inspiring piece. Breath is a simple but very Nourishing tool to create health and wellbeing in your life. Now Diana, can you help us to remember to take a breath break every day?

Ellen Landauer presents Natural Alternative Health CoachingHealth Freedom Coaching: probiotics posted at Health Freedom Coaching. Ellen says, “Did you know that probiotics (beneficial bacteria for the digestive system) can do more than just helping digestion? They can help assimilate protein and minerals to build better muscle and bones, and even help you feel happier!” Great post Ellen. You mention issues with Soil Organisms. Can you tell us more, as Jordan Rubin’s work seems to have helped many people?

Parenting

Tracee Sioux presents Criticize Daughters’ DNA posted at So Sioux Me. When we criticize ourselves we criticize our children’s DNA. A look at what’s really wrong with My Beautiful Mommy, a children’s book about plastic surgery. When we nourish our own self image and self esteem we nourish our children’s too. A very important post. David Deida says the Feminine Power grows through Praise, Masculine Power grows through challenge or (healthy) criticism. That book sounds awful. Why do we need to change to be lovable anyway? BTW check out the competition we’re running about Feminine energy. You could win some lovely moon pads for you cycle.

Jessica Jones presents Our Children Are Our Best Teachers posted at Practical Nourishment. Jessica is one of my favourite writers in this month’s carnival. Not just because her blog is called Practical Nourishment. Jessica, have you checked out Connected Parenting by Pam Leo? Here’s a review.
It seems to be a totally ‘new’ way of looking at parenting that, funnily enough, mimics a lot of what Jean Liedloff discovered when she studied the Ancient Yucatan of South America. Love to know your thoughts.

Green Living

Karen Dowell presents Turning heaps not heads posted at Wiggly Wigglers. Thanks Karen. Your tips for looking after compost are easy to follow and thanks for the extra links. What do you think of those big barrels with a handle? Do they turn compost well or are they just an expensive gimmick?

Feminine Spiritual Power

Debra Moorhead presents The Answer to Every Question posted at Debra Moorhead.com. A very simple post that reminded me of Neale Donald Walsch’s “Conversation with God”. Thanks Debra, we here at Nourished Magazine like to make decisions based on one question also, very similar to yours, “What is the most Nourishing thing to do, say, think, create, right now.”

Green Living

Jessica Jones presents Creating a Healthier Home posted at Practical Nourishment. Thanks Jessica for such a well rounded article written from your own experience. The steps you took to change your life are inspiring and very Nourishing indeed. Great resources too.

Natural Health

Ellen Landauer presents Dandelion: Herbal Liver Cleanse, Better Digestion, and More! posted at Health Freedom Coaching, saying, “Naturally increase your happiness and health by getting nutrient-rich food right from nature, while being out in the sun and fresh air. Dandelion leaves and buds can be made into delicious dishes while supporting good health of liver, gallbladder and kidneys.” I loved the recipes Ellen, especially your capers recipe, although I’d probably lacto-ferment rather than use vinegar.

Susan presents 15 Simple Tips to Help You Live to 100 posted at Metabolism.com - Nutrition and Medical Blog.. Thanks Susan. My favourite tip is the one that says ’surround yourself with supportive people.’ Some gems there.

Tiffany Washko presents Natural Remedies for ADD and ADHD posted at Natural Family Living Blog. I always like your posts Tiffany. I’d like to add to this one, however the importance of nutrient dense food like animal fats, organ meats and cod liver oil to build healthy nervous system, digestive system and immunity. It’s tough to get these foods into behaviourly challenged children, but so very important. Serving burgers with ground organs hidden in them, cinnamon or orange flavoured cod liver oil is a start. And what kid doesn’t like deep fried foods. Just fry in lard or tallow instead of (incredibly damaging) vegetable oil will Nourish them with more fat soluble vitamins. I’d also do my best to avoid refined carbohydrates of any kind. Compromised nervous systems really don’t need the roller coaster ride.

Shaheen Lakhan presents Fighting Depression: 10 Step Do-It-Yourself Approach posted at GNIF Brain Blogger. This is a fabulous post by one who has successfully healed herself of depression. Your suggestion to exercise is very wise and always works for me. I would add to your wonderful list of tips to include large doses of butter and coconut oil as well as leaving the fat on your meat and eat Liver once a week.

Ellen Landauer presents Stress from Electromagnetic Fields: Natural Solutions posted at Health Freedom Coaching, saying, “Simple tips for transforming your home into a more relaxing and safe haven by minimizing electromagnetic field (EMF) pollution. Also, protective diet and supplements.” A thoroughly enjoyable and inspirational post Ellen. I have a dream to sleep with absolutely no electricity near my body. To this end we are building two yurts to live in, one for all the action of the day and one with no electricity for our family to sleep. I think it would make the world of difference since I spend so much time in front of the computer.

Joshua Seth presents Aspartame Dangers posted at Joshua Seth Blog, saying, “In my weight loss hypnosis sessions I repeatedly implant the suggestion to “make healthy food choices”, but how are you supposed to know what’s healthy when deadly poisons are labeled as sugar-free “diet food”?” I loved to see this curse driven from the shelves of our supermarkets. The only way this will happen, however, is for posts such as this to continue to circulate. The addictive nature of Aspartame is worrying but it’s great to hear people like you can help with hypnosis. Please anyone who has a loved one on Aspartame, send them to this post.

Alvaro Fernandez presents Sleep, Tetris, Memory and the Brain posted at SharpBrains, saying, “Why sleep is so important nourishment.” Funny, Alvaro, many a parent will agree with you about children waking and parents missing sleep. It’s like torture sometimes. Imagine how it must be for the child to wake in fright so many times each night. Dr Buckley has some very interesting comments about mother and child sleep cycles in this great article about co-sleeping. It seems babies and mums sleeping together sleep less deeply and come in and out of cycles together, rather than out of rhythm, as is the case when sleeping separately. Studies show mum’s who co-sleep breastfeed more often than they think they do. Sometimes they don’t even wake up. Just another example of the wisdom of our Ancestors.

Nutrition

Lovelyn presents The Importance of Eating Real Food posted at The Art of Balanced Living. It’s always quite disturbing the many posts I receive for this carnival about nutrition that I just can’t include because I can not call them Nourishing. This post is an exemption. Thank the Goddess for Michael Pollan.

Parenting

There is so much misinformation out there being shuffled around and around. Here’s a good round up of Nourishing posts, though.

Feminine Spiritual Power

Astrid Lee presents Power of Pearl posted at World Healing, saying, “It seems that many of us know the Healing Power of Pearls intuitively, being drawn to them, at times. This article offers insight on how to consciously acquire pearls into our lives for our health and well-being. Pearls are truly about Feminine power.” Beautiful Astrid. Thanks.

Food Glorious Food.

David Gross presents The Picket Line — 15 February 2008 posted at The Picket Line, saying, “Just how much of a premium are we paying when we buy produce through a Community Supported Agriculture program instead of just going to the corner market? There’s one way to find out: collect the figures and do the math.” David, I hope you decide to continue with your CSA. Your food security and the rest of your countries security is at risk. Soon CSA will be the only way because the other channels of supply will be simply too expensive.

Carole Fogarty presents The Authentic Chocolate Facial: A Superfood for your Skin: posted at THE HEALTHY LIVING LOUNGE, saying, “Uma Thurman, Madonna and Victoria Beckham are all reported to indulge in chocolate facials. Raw cacao (cocoa) powder is now considered one of the worlds most beneficial super foods emerging in our world today. It has four times more antioxidants than goji berries, ten times the antioxidant level of blueberries and thirty times the antioxidant level of green tea.” What a wonderful idea.

Thanks Michael.

Alfa, your suggestions are great.
Please Cedric, before you experience what many Nourished Magazine readers have in their past, research more about vegetarianism in human’s history. Quick heads up Cedric: There is none. Not one preindustrialised society were purely vegetarian. Please see:

Myths and Truths about Vegetarianism at the Weston A Price Foundation site. There are many references to scientific and anthropological proof that a diet of purely vegetable matter has a negative impact on human health. Stick around, we’ll fill you in.

Meantime, we hope you think deeply about this decision and if you do go ahead, at least eat butter, raw milk and raw cheese.
Tupelo Kenyon presents Is Food Your Medicine or Poison? posted at Tupelo Kenyon, saying, “Food is not what it used to be. In the relatively recent past, food was universally recognized as the fruits and nuts that grow on trees, the vegetables that grow out of the soil, plus some fish and game. If you were to take a ride in a time machine and show our ancestors what we eat today, they would recognize very little of it. For the most part, it’s over-packaged, over-processed, over-rated and under-nourishing. Every day, we choose our future health and vitality by what we choose to put in our mouths. Three times a day we have the opportunity to act upon our resolve to experience optimum health and vitality . . . at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Bon appetit. ”

You make very important points Tupelo but I worry about your recommendation of the book, “The China Study”. Please read Sally Fallon’s review of this very unscientific book.

That should be enough of a clue it’s something that can be trusted. But, our culture has done a thorough job of instilling doubt about the wisdom of following our instincts. Instead, we are taught to think things through and be logical. These mental tools are important, but they were never intended to be used instead of intuition. They work better when used in conjunction with intuition. If we are open to it, we get nudges and insights to move us in the direction of our greatest joys, our most valuable contributions, and our most satisfying life.
Anmol Mehta presents Healthy Ayurvedic Diet To Burn Fat & Lose Weight posted at Mastery of Meditation, Enlightenment & Kundalini Yoga, saying, “Using the wisdom of Ayurveda, the ancient Eastern science of healing, to determine what to eat in order to reduce weight naturally and be healthy.” There are some interesting points in this post, for instance, eating pungent, spicy, bitter tastes will reduce Kapha dosha thus reducing Kapha imbalance which causes excess fat storage. However, Anmol says ” 30-40% of your diet should be whole grains, 20-30% protein..40-50% mostly vegetables and some fruit.” I’m supposing Anmol is unaware, as are most people, that Asian bodies are physically different to Caucasians, African’s and especially other Aboriginal peoples. Asian people have a pancreas 50% larger than other races. See Edward Howell “Enzyme Nutrition”. A high grain diet, even wholegrains, will only cause metabolic disturbance and thus weight increase in westerners and some Aboriginal peoples. This makes sense when you realise what Asian people have subsisted on for at least 15,000 years. Grains. The rest of us have not. Also I am left wondering, where is the fat? Fat, especially from animals (in Ayruvedic cuisine we use ghee), is vital to health as it carries fat soluble vitamins that are not found in any other food source, Vitamin A, E, D, K. Sally Fallon and Mary Enig have written an excellent book called “Eat Fat, Lose Fat”. It’s worth a look.

Cacao is one food that Todd recommends. It’s a bit of a fad at the moment so I did an experiment last winter. I will post about it soon but the results weren’t that promising. Suffice it to say that Mayan people only used the been unfermented and unroasted in shamanic ceremony with yage (Ayahuasca), a potent psychotropic drug. The toxic side effects of unprepared cocoa plant may negate the antioxidant content. Will elaborate in a later post. Firstly animal protein without fat causes severe deficiencies in Vitamin A and other vital fat soluble vitamins. Secondly skim milk will make you fat. Ask any old farmer what they used to do to fatten the pigs before slaughter. They will tell you, feed them skim milk. The dried milk powder they have to put in that slop to make it taste decent is dried at such high temperatures, the proteins become toxic. Not good. Eating the way our ancestors did for thousand of years ensures we won’t fall for marketing hype and government dietary policies that pander to the needs of agribusiness. Thirdly, whole grains that are not prepared adequately damage the digestion. All grains and legumes should be soaked for at least 7 hours before cooking and eating.

They are genetically predisposed to consuming large amounts of carbohydrates and fibre. We are not. See Dr. Edward Howell’s book Enzyme Nutrition for the scientific studies proving this. I do agree that Asian food traditions ensure small amounts of nutrient dense food gets eaten at every meal. If you don’t want to eat insects or strange seafood, go for organic, grass fed raw milk, butter, cream, organ meats, cod liver oil.

Welcome to the August 2007 edition of Carnival of Nourishment. Welcome to newbies and good to see you oldbies? again. Enjoy.

Amanda at Rebuild From Depression, shares a great raw milk story about the last remaining gallon of milk from the September 2006 recall at Organic Pastures for E.coli. What to do with the milk? Amanda says, ‘In the poll I’m running, oddly, the winner seems to be “make a custard” (which requires cooking). I lean towards the Alex Avery idea, but it looks like the milk will be the center of a one year false recall anniversary party and consumed by a few raw milk crazies like Mark McAfee and me.’ I loved this post. I love this blog. It’s the only one I read regularly that isn’t on NourishedMagazine.com.au at the moment, thanks Amanda.

Christian Bachmann at MedJournalWatch tells us how Mother nature supplies the baby with all it needs, even with bacteria for a healthy gut flora with his Probiotics in Mother’s Milk. Thanks Christian, you may be interested to know that cesarean babies are likely to suffer digestive problems later in life because they are inoculated with hospital bacteria rather than vaginal bacteria.

Fit Buff, shares a great explanation of the Glycemic Index Recommending we concentrate on Low GI foods which don’t send you body into a sugar peak and insulin trough. Of course, you can always get your energy from fat, a much more efficient way to consume calories as your body can use it straight away, without the insulin shock. If you’re worried about eating fat, read Lori Lipinski’s Taking the Fear out of Eating Fat.

Veggie Chick, tells us about her green bean adventure. I hope her vegetarianism includes raw, grass fed dairy products, without which her diet will be deficient of B6, B12, A, D, K and probably E.

Lastly, Conan Stevens has some great advice about Body building.
